Brass square tube is a versatile and popular material used in the fabrication industry and, chances are, you’ve used it in your projects. However, some of your pieces may have a lost a bit of their luster. Bring back their vibrancy by taking the following restoration steps.
Identifying the material
Before doing anything, you’ll want to identify what type of brass square tubing you have. Two of the most common include solid brass and brass-plated steel. The easiest way to identify which brass you have is to stick a magnet to your pieces. If the magnet sticks, it is a brass-plated type of metal. If it doesn’t stick, chances are the piece is solid brass.
Cleaning
If your metal pieces are brass-plated, you’ll want to be extremely careful when cleaning. Don’t scrub for too long or too hard because you’ll remove the plating all together if you are not careful. With solid brass, you don’t have to be as careful and you’ll need soapy water and a microfiber towel. Keep rinsing the pieces with warm water as you clean and dry completely.
Polishing
If you are going to polish your brass pieces to give them their shine back, you’ll need to use a soft cleaning tool. Otherwise, you run the risk of scratching and damaging your pieces. Use a thin coat of linseed oil or mineral oil and a soft towel. Keep rubbing until you achieve desired results.
If your brass square tubing has lost its luster, take proactive measures to make it look like new. And if any of your brass square tubing need to be replaced completely, talk to a dealer that sells these metals.
