The Types of Industrial-Grade Metal Alloys Made from Bronze Bars

The metal industry has been booming since metals were introduced into the constriction process. Thanks technological advances, metal manufacturing has become a lucrative business. Pure and recycled bronze bars are processed into complex bronze alloys to expand their uses.

The secret to bronze’s versatility is the variation in metal composition. These are some of the most common alloys created from bronze that have a significant impact on the metal industry:


1. Aluminum Bronze

One of the most useful types of bronze alloy in today’s metal industry is what is commonly called the aluminum bronze. Its popularity in marine application is due to its impressive strength and enhanced anti-corrosive properties. The alloy is composed of 6 to 12% aluminum, no more than 6% iron, plus around 6% nickel. They are best used for pumps transporting liquids that have strong corrosive qualities.

2. Silicon Bronze

This type of bronze alloy is also known as the “red silicon bronze” because it contains some copper. The main components of this alloy are 20% zinc and silicon that should not exceed 6% of the total alloy constitution. Silicon bronze is commonly used in the manufacturing process of valve and pump parts.

3. Copper Nickel

A high content of nickel gives the copper nickel its name. Although technically called “copper nickel,” it is still classified as a bronze alloy. The amount of nickel varies anywhere from 2% to 30%, but even the smallest amount increases the alloy’s corrosion resistance. Aside from this, copper nickel is also known for its thermal stability. This property alone makes it the perfect alloy for ship hulls, electronic components, and even some equipment used for marine application.

4. Phosphor Bronze

Another name for phosphor bronze is “tin bronze” because the alloy contains anywhere from 0.5 to 1% tin. It is called phosphor bronze due to its standout component of 0.01 to 0.35% phosphorous. The combination of bronze, tin, and phosphorus creates an alloy of amazing strength, exceptional durability, a high resistance to fatigue, and a significantly low friction coefficient. With the addition of zinc into the composition, the alloy is also resistant to corrosion. These properties make phosphor bronze the best when used as springs, washers, bellows, and so many other uses.

5. Nickel Brass

Not to be confused with copper nickel, this alloy is also referred to as the nickel silver. It is made with a combination of tin, copper, and nickel. The higher nickel content creates that iconic silver coloring while tin adds to the alloy’s anti-corrosive properties and tensile strength. The most common use for the alloy is for food and beverage equipment, musical instruments, and even equipment used for optical procedures.
