A Quick Guide to Etching Copper Sheets for Crafts
There are a number of ways to decorate metal. You can paint it, stick adornments on it, or even carve through its surface. After all, metals are malleable and very easy to work. They make a great material for a variety of crafts. Copper, in particular, is one of the most extensively used metals for making art pieces, thanks to its extreme workability. And one of the best ways to decorate copper is through etching. Here’s a guide for those who want to try etching copper sheets for crafts.
Step 1: Preparation and Safety
Etching involves the use of acid or mordant, usually ferric chloride. Either chemical can burn your skin. It’s important to observe basic safety precaution to avoid possible injury. Wear safety glasses and gloves to protect your body from spillage. Before you wear them, make sure to prepare the copper sheet you will be etching first. Clean and dry it thoroughly to remove any residue that might inhibit the etching process.

Where to Buy Copper Sheets and How to Use Them for Home Enhancement
Renovating your home at least every couple of years can help you avoid costly repairs and raise your living standards. Depending on the materials you use, you can enjoy extra perks, such as added durability to your furniture and fixtures. One material that is particularly worth incorporating into you project is copper sheet.
Copper is prized for its many useful properties, including malleability, corrosion resistance, and antimicrobial. It’s one of the few metals than can be flattened and stretched into thin sheets without breaking. While copper tarnishes easily, it doesn’t rust or corrode. Its ability to trigger the oligodynamic effect (a natural phenomenon that kills bacteria) makes it a powerful water purifier. These three properties make copper perfect for the following applications in your home remodeling project.
Countertop
You do most of your kitchen tasks on your countertop, so it is only right to make sure that it is not only durable but hygienic as well. By covering with copper sheet, you’ll not only add protection to this expensive fixture, but you’ll also make sure that the food you’ll prepare for your family is free from harmful bacteria. Plus, it’s naturally elegant-looking so it’s okay concealing the granite underneath it. Where to Buy Copper Sheets and Tubes: Learn about High Conductivity and Deoxidized Copper First
Copper is the metal of choice for most craftsmen and builders because of
its useful qualities. Apart from being highly resistant to corrosion and
microbes, it is also easy to work with. It’s no wonder this metal and all its
alloys are utilized for a vast range of applications, including electronics,
electrical engineering, plumbing, and construction. If you’re looking for a
metal that is both durable and striking to include in your project, copper is
your best bet.
Before you go looking for a copper supplier in your area, it would
definitely help to find out more about copper first. After all, there are many
different alloys and grades of copper to choose from so having more knowledge
about the metal is key to picking the type that best suits your project.
Essentially, copper compounds and alloys are categorized into these two types.
High
Conductivity Copper
More than 30 percent of all copper supplies are utilized for electrical
applications. The wires and cables within the walls and ceilings of your home
and the distribution line connected to the utility posts outside are all made
of copper. Thanks to the metal’s excellent ductility and malleability, it can
be molded into small leads and thin sheets that are needed for these
applications. More importantly, copper is also known for its high conductivity,
exceeded only by silver, which makes it a great electrical wire material.
Even if it only comes next to silver in terms of electrical
conductivity, copper is still preferred for manufacturing electrical wires
because it is much less expensive. Take note though that copper comes in
various grades, each having a unique degree of purity. The purer the copper,
the higher its conductivity. Most copper materials that have undergone the
initial purification process contain at least 93 percent copper.
Deoxidized
Copper
Like most other metals, copper usually contains a trace amount of
oxygen. If not removed, this oxygen can make copper brittle when brazed or
welded with other metals, specifically through contact with hydrogen used in
the process. To remove the oxygen molecules, phosphorous or boron is added to
the mixture to increase the material’s density and purge all impurities. The
resulting material is dense and tough enough to be ideal for making plumbing
systems and domestic gas supply parts.
Most copper panels and tubes used for making roofing materials and
central heating systems are deoxidized as well. This method also improves
copper’s ability to be alloyed with other metals, such as zinc and tin. The
quality of the resulting alloys, however, still depends on the amount of other
metals included in the mixture.
If you want to know where to buy copper sheets and tubes for
your project, consider looking for a company that has been in operation for
many decades, such as Rotax Metals. Not only does such supplier have a huge
selection of products, but it surely also has experts who can give you the best

A Copper Sheet Supplier Discusses Flint’s Conversion to Copper Pipes
If you were watching the news back in 2014, it was impossible to miss the Flint, MI water crisis. Three years ago, the city opted to change its source of water from the City of Detroit to the Flint River. Unfortunately, the proper anti-corrosion measures were not observed.
As a result, the water leached lead from the aging pipelines and delivered the toxic water straight into people’s homes. In fact, tests revealed that the water in the area contained 10 times the lead limit imposed by the Environmental Protection Agency.

First Steps in Solving the Problem
The good news is that Flint’s water has finally returned to normal, though the residents are still being cautioned to use water filters or consume bottled water. Moreover, the local government also plans to enact long-term solutions that will solve the problem at its core.
Officials also announced that the city will be replacing almost 5,000 lead pipelines with copper. As Mayor Karen Weaver said during the Flint Water Infrastructure Summit, “Copper piping is the best material to use for the service lines because it’s long lasting and impermeable, so contaminants can’t get into our drinking water. Brass Angle: A Durable, Versatile Metals
Brass parts look great, are easy to machine, and benefit
from this special metal’s unique properties. Brass tools are parts are resistant
to corrosion and can leverage high density settings. Even better, they don’t
require a surface finish; thus, saving on delivery time and cost.
Brass is non-magnetic, has good malleability, and is
relatively resistant to tarnishing. Because of its unique attribute such as
good acoustics, brass is often used in musical instruments. Its flow
characteristics and relatively low melting point make it a comparatively easy
to cast. In addition, they have a low friction coefficient, making it
well-suited for lots of applications.

Working with Brass Stock and a Solder
Brass carries a whole raft of options when you’re up for some arts and crafts work. Introducing them personally to a solder is one of the more effective ways to bring parts like a tube or brass angle, together. When you’re getting down to business with metal stocks and a solder, there are a number of things to keep in mind.
Cleaning
A firm hold may be possible if all the brass parts were already cut up and cleaned prior to attachment. For example, if you’re preparing to assemble a special frame made of brass angles to house a candle, it pays to make the layout and test fit the parts. Clean up the parts, especially the contact points, with metallic products, such as sandpaper, as any debris may complicate the solder. This will make the surfaces coarse enough for the flux.
